Yewdale's Commitment to Sustainability: Reducing Our Footprint While Helping Businesses do the Same

At Yewdale, a big part of what we do is helping businesses reduce their energy consumption. By designing and developing products that ensure effective temperature regulation, we’re making it easy for organisations to reduce their reliance on heating and cooling systems. This is an important step in saving the planet.

But it’s not just about creating sustainable products for others. We believe in practicing what we preach, and that’s why we’ve put our own measures in place to minimise our environmental impact. We’re striving to do our part to protect the planet for future generations.

Why sustainability matters

We recognise that the production of blinds and components inevitably has an impact on the planet. From raw material sourcing to manufacturing processes, every step leaves a mark. However, we know that we can reduce this impact. As an industry, we must acknowledge the environmental challenges we face and strive to create smart solutions that minimise harm. By implementing energy-efficient practices, recycling materials, and innovating with sustainable fabrics, we’re confident we can produce high-quality products with the least possible environmental impact.

Aiming for net zero

We understand that sustainability is about taking responsibility, and that’s why Yewdale is committed to achieving net zero by 2030. We’ve developed a comprehensive carbon reduction plan. It was created with the support and guidance of an environmental consultancy, and outlines the specific actions we’ll take to reduce our carbon emissions and shift towards more sustainable practices. We’re focusing on cutting down energy consumption from fossil fuels while simultaneously reducing our overall environmental footprint. Here’s a glimpse into what we’re doing to meet our goal.

1. Solar panels

In 2023, we took a huge step towards our sustainability goals by installing 529 solar panels on the roof of our Wickford office and production factory. They’re a game-changer, helping us to power our production process using renewable electricity, and significantly reducing our reliance on non-renewable energy sources.

The panels have been generating a substantial amount of energy, and we’re thrilled to see the positive impact they’re having. During the sunnier months, our solar panels meet around 80% of our total energy needs – a fantastic achievement. And when we generate more than we need, we feed the excess back into the grid, helping others benefit from clean energy.

2. Recycling initiatives

At Yewdale, sustainability isn’t just about energy; it’s also about reducing waste. That’s why we developed the ‘Greener Together’ initiative, available through our Elite delivery service. This allows our customers to return their plastic and cardboard packaging from previous Yewdale deliveries with our driver, who will transport it back to our factory for processing.

Once the packaging returns to us, we either reuse it if it’s still in good condition, or send it off to our recycling contractor. Any metal extrusions or offcuts we don’t use in production are sent to scrap dealers, so nothing goes to waste. We’re keeping materials out of landfill, ensuring everything gets processed responsibly.

3. Circular solutions

Our Tara recycled fabric range, available in dimout, blackout, and screen fabrics, is made from post-consumer recycled plastic. It’s a fantastic example of a circular economy in action. Not only are these fabrics made from recycled material, but they can also be recycled again!

The fabrics are made with less water and energy, helping to lower the carbon footprint of production. It’s the perfect balance of quality and sustainability; just as effective as traditional fabrics, but kinder to the environment. By using post-consumer recycled plastics in the Tara range, we’re helping reduce waste while creating a brilliant fabric that performs just as well as traditional options.

Sustainability with purpose

At Yewdale, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a core value that drives everything we do. From powering our production with solar energy to offering circular solutions with our recycled fabric range, we’re constantly finding new ways to reduce our environmental footprint and help our customers do the same. Our commitment to achieving net zero by 2030 is just one part of our long-term sustainability plan. We’re excited to continue making strides toward a greener future.
