Ever wondered what it would take to walk from Essex to Milan (Italy) in a day?

We’ve set a target of 15,000 steps per employee, to be achieved within a 24-hour period. That’s a total of 1.2 million steps which equates to 600 miles (that’s the distance from Wickford to Milan!)

Ok, ok, so we’re not physically walking to Milan in a day – after all, we still need to keep our customers supplied (and the small task of tackling the alps may slow us down a little). But we did set ourselves the goal of raising money for a superb cause: Diabetes UK.

Diabetes is a very serious disease, affecting nearly 3.7 million people in the UK. It is estimated that 12.3 million people are at an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, which can be caused by excess weight and inactivity, as well as environmental and hereditary factors. Therefore walking 10,000 steps a day can form the basis of a healthy and active lifestyle, and sometimes we just need reminding that we can do it.

Pacer news

Every member of staff will use Pacer for Teams, an app that tracks the number of steps our teams achieve throughout the day, and the total will be tallied up as we go. The workforce will be split into teams who must make sure each person achieves their target, or the others must make up for the shortfall. Here at Yewdale we emphasise team work, and this will be a fine example of our whole company pulling together to reach a target.

So, we will be dusting off our walking boots and preparing to go the extra distance on Wednesday 22nd August. You can do your bit supporting this worthwhile cause by sponsoring us through our JustGiving page, for which we’d be very grateful. Diabetes UK is a very worthy cause who support those living with diabetes, providing advice, specialist insurance and increased awareness of the disease.
